What is a Functional Trainer?

A versatile functional trainer is one of the most common cable machines you'll see in any gym. It is comprised of two identical sides - each with their own adjustable pulleys and weight plates and some type of crossbar connecting the two sides. Usually, there is a pull-up bar or multi-grip chip up grip at the top of the machine.

The column usually has many different heights adjustments to start your exercise at different cable positions depending on what you want to do. One end of the cable is attached to a weight stack, or weight carriage if your machine is plate loaded. The other end of the cable has a carabiner, allowing you to use many different handle attachments. The dual weight stacks will vary per model, but are generally in some variation of 5lb, 10lb or 15lb increments allowing the user to select anywhere from 0lbs to 300lbs or more per side.

The adjustability of a functional trainer is what gives it its name. You can do a ton of functional training movements that mimic how you move in real life. They're also commonly used for bodybuilding types of movements - tricep press downs, lat pulldowns, bicep curls, chest flys, etc. It's one of the few machines that allows for a wide variety of movements and can provide a full-body workout by itself.

The limitless versatility of a functional trainer really makes it a perfect match for any gym space - including home gyms, commercial gyms or private personal training spaces.

How do I Choose a Functional Trainer?

If you're seriously considering the purchase of a functional trainer machine, here are the top factors to take into account:

Size and Space Requirements

You'll always want to double check the overall size dimensions of a piece of gym equipment prior to purchasing. Do you have the floor space for this cable machine where you intend to put it? Many home gym and garage gym buyers only have small spaces, and restricted height clearances. This can be a factor as many machines are made with an 83" or 84" height. Functional trainers can also be used in many different ways, so you'll also want to have space out in front of the machine to maximize its potential.

Design and Build Quality

In the realm of functional trainers, the design and build quality are paramount. Opt for equipment crafted from high-grade steel, ensuring durability and stability for long-term use. Machines featuring adjustable components, like pulleys and cables, should offer smooth operation and withstand the rigors of varied workouts. The construction should balance sturdiness with a design that maximizes space efficiency, allowing for a wide array of exercises without consuming excessive room. High-quality welds, powder-coated finishes, and precision in the manufacturing process are indicators of a functional trainer built to endure and perform under constant use, marking it as a wise investment for any fitness enthusiast.

While a two stack or dual stack functional trainer is the most common variation, there are also single stack functional trainers. Many single stack options will bring limitations with them - such as light weight capacities and worse pulley ratios - but they will cut down on both cost and overall space!

Resistance Type: Weight Stacks or Plate Loaded

Plate-loaded functional trainers offer a unique set of benefits that cater to a diverse range of fitness enthusiasts. Unlike their weight stack counterparts, plate-loaded machines allow for the use of Olympic weight plates, providing a customizable approach to resistance training. This can be particularly appealing for those who already possess a collection of plates, as it eliminates the need for additional investment in specific weight stacks.

There are some clear benefits to a selectorized weight stack model: no loading and unloading weights, no worrying doing math to figure out how much is loaded - and more importantly, its much quicker and easier to change the load in between sets or for drop sets. When opting for a weight stack model, capacity is a very important spec to consider. Many models have options that can range from 150lbs to 200lbs with options for expansion, but some are a fixed weight stack with no upgrade options. Please think about how much weight you need, and if you'll need to add on later!

Pulley Ratio

The pulley ratio of a functional trainer significantly impacts the effective weight felt during exercise. A 2:1 ratio means that for every 2 pounds of weight selected, the user feels only 1 pound of resistance (100lbs loaded = 50lbs resistance felt). Understanding this ratio is crucial for accurately gauging workout intensity and tailoring resistance to fitness levels and goals.

While a 2:1 ratio is the most common by far, there are models with different ratios. Some have a 4:1 ratio, which means you only feel a resistance of 25% of the weight loaded onto the cable. Pay attention to this number, and make sure to ask if it's not presented in the product information!

Attachments and Accessories for Added Versatility

Other important features of cable machine that you should consider are the included accessories, accessory storage, attachment options, aluminum pulleys and more.

Most functional trainers come with at least a straight pull up bar that combines the dual weight stacks. This is not only for overall structural integrity, but also provides you a convenient place to work on your core and back without needed to install another piece of fitness equipment.

Many cable machines come with included attachments, but some don't! You should consider what's included and what you will need to buy in addition to the machine. Some of the most popular cable attachments are a tricep rope, ankle strap, or curl bar. Certain models have storage for attachments in between the weight stacks to keep your space tidy and organized.

Some all-in-one functional trainers even have lat pulldown seat attachments, dip attachments, power rack safeties and j-cups or leg press machine plates!

What does your model come with and are there any add-ons you may want down the road?

Warranty

Different brands have different warranty policies. A company like Body-Solid offers lifetime in home coverage on many of their functional trainer models, but shorter coverage on commercial use. It's important to identify they type of gym you're buying for and compare that to the coverage level of the companies warranty. It is pretty standard for the frame itself to have much longer coverage than parts like pulleys and cables.

Price

How much money can you spend on functional trainer? Only you can answer that question! Price point is just as much of a factor as any of the above features. Many gym owners - residential and commercial alike - have strict budgets. Even though this cable machine is a versatile piece of fitness equipment, you'll need to find the balance between cost and features to make your decision.

Are Functional Trainers Worth It?

Absolutely, functional trainers are worth the investment for several reasons. They offer unparalleled versatility, allowing you to perform a wide range of exercises that target different muscle groups, including compound movements and isolation exercises. This adaptability makes them suitable for users of all fitness levels, from beginners to advanced athletes, and supports a variety of training goals, such as strength building, hypertrophy, and improving overall fitness.

Functional trainers are also space-efficient, combining the functionalities of multiple gym machines into one compact unit. This makes them ideal for home gyms or smaller fitness spaces where conserving floor space is a priority.

Can You Build Muscle With A Functional Trainer?

Absolutely, you can build muscle with a functional trainer. These versatile machines enable a vast array of exercises that target different muscle groups, allowing for both compound movements and isolation exercises. The ability to perform exercises like squats, lunges, rows, and presses, all with adjustable resistance, means you can effectively stimulate muscle growth.

The key to building muscle is progressive overload, which involves gradually increasing the weight, volume, or intensity of your workouts over time. Functional trainers facilitate this principle beautifully, as they offer easy adjustments in resistance, enabling you to consistently challenge your muscles as you grow stronger. Additionally, the variety of exercises possible on a functional trainer can help prevent plateaus and keep your workouts engaging, further contributing to muscle development and overall fitness.

Conclusion: The Best Functional Trainer for You

Choosing the best functional trainer boils down to understanding your unique fitness needs, space requirements, and budget. With options ranging from compact models perfect for home gyms to robust units designed for commercial use, there's a functional trainer out there that's tailored to your workout style and goals.

Whether you're drawn to the versatility of a multi-functional trainer, the convenience of a model with a Smith machine, or the affordability of a budget-friendly option, it's crucial to weigh the features that matter most to you. Consider the exercises you plan to perform, the amount of space you have available, and how much you're willing to invest in your fitness journey. By taking into account these factors, you're well on your way to selecting a functional trainer that will not only meet your current fitness needs but also grow with you as you progress.

Remember, the best functional trainer is the one that aligns with your personal fitness goals, space, and budget, empowering you to achieve the results you desire.
